Both Shetland and Orkney have long and interesting histories, at times pivotal in the development of the British Isles. Human existence can be traced back nearly eight thousand years and they have been the home of Neolithic man, Picts, Vikings and now the Scots. Their past connections to Scandinavia are still visible in the names and culture of these two island groups.

The University of the Highlands and Islands Institute for Northern Studies recently invited anyone in New Zealand interested in the history of Shetland and Orkney to participate in an online course. The lectures were recorded and are available online.
